The "New" Food Pyramid Isn't a Pyramid!

New Dietary Guidelines for Americans Focused on Balance & Reduction.

The MyPyramid Food Guidance System translates nutritional recommendations into the kinds and amounts of food to eat each day. In 2005 the USDA released the first updated dietary guidelines, since 1992. The new "Food Pyramid" included steps to indicate regular exercise as an essential part of good nutrition. In 2011, new guidelines were released with another new recommendation; reduction and balance.

This year, First Lady Michelle Obama and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack unveiled the federal government's new food icon, MyPlate. MyPlate replaces the old "Food Pyramid", which many thought was too cumbersome and hard for most families to follow. This new generation icon intends to prompt consumers to think about building a healthy plate at meal times. As you can see by the image, the plate provides a quick and easy guideline for how much space each food group should take up on your plate. This helps to clarify portion size which has become a big part of the obesity problem in this country and elsewhere.

Complete details of the new guideliness focus on balance and nutrition and include specific guidance for different audiences. With more than one-third of children and two-thirds of adults in the United States overweight or obese, the 7th edition Dietary Guidelines place stronger emphasis on reducing calorie consumption and increasing physical activity.

The following is a summary of the federal government's updated recommendations for achieving a healthy lifestyle and physical fitness:

Balancing calories to Manage weight
